The Revitalization of Route 1
In collaboration of Fairfax County’s Channel 16, SFDC produced this video to highlight visions for the future of the Richmond Highway corridor. This video is the first in a series discussing this particular area of Fairfax County.
About SFDC
Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC) is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to improving the Richmond Highway (Route 1) corridor from the Capital Beltway to Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County, Virginia. Our 13-member board represents a broad cross-section of community, business, economic development, and real estate leaders. More…
History
US Route 1 stretches from Maine to Florida, and was one of the country’s first highways. The eight-mile segment of Route 1 located between Alexandria and Fort Belvoir known as Richmond Highway has long served as a major through route and commercial corridor for the Mount Vernon-Lee community. SFDC strives to make a better Richmond Highway while being mindful of the history of the corridor. Historic photo gallery.
Building a New Groveton
A new mixed-use development featuring new retail options and 290 market-rate apartments will be complete by the end of the year. To lease an apartment, visit the Beacon of Groveton website. For more information about this project, and other projects on Richmond Highway, see our Status of Projects Report.
Transportation
Richmond Highway is a major north-south arterial road that is the backbone of Southeast Fairfax County. The highway is accessible to the Washington METRO system (Huntington Station), the Capital Beltway (I-495), and multiple bus routes. Several major improvement projects are underway at this time, including the widening of a portion of Richmond Highway, the construction of a new connector road, and a countywide transit study.
