Public Comments for Route 1 Improvement Studies

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), in cooperation with Fairfax County, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Belvoir has initiated studies for improvements to U.S. Route 1 through Fort Belvoir. The limits of the studies are from Telegraph Road to Mount Vernon Highway. Among the components of the study will be identification of transportation needs, analysis of alternatives to meet those needs, and analysis of the environmental consequences of those alternatives, all of which will be documented in an Environmental Assessment in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. Public involvement and coordination with local, state, and federal agencies will be ongoing throughout the study. At this early stage of the study, citizen suggestions and comments are invited to help define the scope of the study with respect to transportation needs in this section of the Route 1 corridor, the range of alternatives to be considered, and important environmental concerns.

Fort Belvoir Hospital Update

Colonel Charles Callahan and Dr. Richard Repeta updated the SFDC Board of Directors and Committee members during a special October 22 meeting about the status of the Fort Belvoir Hospital. The new 120 bed community based Hospital will provide 55 primary and specialty clinics, and employ 3,198 staff members.  The Military Health Facility was designed with "evidence-based design" principles and goals and will be a Silver level LEED Certification project.  The 1.2 million square foot project was also inspired from the soaring eagles over Fort Belvoir and Accotink Bay Refuge on the Potomac River and nearby historic Mount Vernon and Woodlawn Estate.
