SFDC Wayfinding Program

History

In late 2006 the SFDC learned they had successfully acquired an Economic Development Initative Grant for the Penn Daw area.  Looking at the Design Committee Work Plan, the Committee determined that eliminating sign clutter was a good way to utilize the grant.  Staff drafted a Request for Proposals (RFP) which was issued in January 2007.  Additional funds were identified to hire a contractor to design and create a wayfinding plan for the SFDC program area.

Purpose

Richmond Highway is a vibrant business community with six major commercial nodes along a seven and a half mile stretch.  Each of these commercial areas has a unique identity, and the SFDC Wayfinding Program is intended to create a consistent and identifiable message as travelers pass through each area along the highway and, ultimately, arrive at their destination.

Current Status

The Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC) Wayfinding Initiative has received design approval from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).  The twelve signs approved for the first phase of the Wayfinding Initiative will be used to highlight the six commercial nodes designated by the County that function as separate economic clusters along the Corridor.

The next step is to submit applications for construction permits which typically take a couple months to approve.  When the time comes, VDOT, Fairfax County and SFDC will continue to work with the surrounding communities to ensure proper placement of the signs.

Commercial Areas and Signage

The signage begins at each gateway (North and South), guides travelers through each of the six commercial areas, and directs travelers to historic, cultural, and public resources. The six commercial areas are:

    • North Gateway
  • Penn Daw
  • Groveton
  • Hybla Valley
  • Mt. Zephyr
  • South Gateway
