In late 2006 the SFDC learned they had successfully acquired an Economic Development Initative Grant for the Penn Daw area. Looking at the Design Committee Work Plan, the Committee determined that eliminating sign clutter was a good way to utilize the grant. Staff drafted a Request for Proposals (RFP) which was issued in January 2007. Additional funds were identified to hire a contractor to design and create a wayfinding plan for the SFDC program area. Purpose Richmond Highway is a vibrant business community with six major commercial nodes along a seven and a half mile stretch. Each of these commercial areas has a unique identity, and the SFDC Wayfinding Program is intended to create a consistent and identifiable message as travelers pass through each area along the highway and, ultimately, arrive at their destination. Current Status In early 2007, SFDC selected RFJF Hillier as design contractor and chose a signage style that reflects the business and historical community of Richmond Highway. SFDC is now working with the Virginia Department of Transportation, Public Works and "Visit Fairfax" to determine right-of-way and sign dimensions so that we can move forward with the program. ![]() Commercial Areas and Signage The signage begins at each gateway (North and South), guides travelers through each of the six commercial areas, and directs travelers to historic, cultural, and public resources. To date, 145 signs have been identified as necessary to comprehensively implement this program. An inventory of existing signs has been completed, and a report to VDOT including specific sign locations, utilities and right-of-way is in creation. Please watch here for ongoing updates! |
